If we don't know the cause of the big bang, then how can we know that God is not required?

Atheists keep making the claim- the big bang demonstrates that God is not required in the creation of the universe. But we don't know the cause! If we ever do learn the cause, we may see that it does require God. Why do people insist on taking this scientific theory and using it as a myth to start building a modern religion?
